A Taser costs $600-1000 on average and tops out at around $2000. Prices vary depending on the model Taser you choose, whether you prefer single or dual cartridges, the distance you want to keep between you and your assailant, and the inclusion of 911 companion apps.
A TASER brand gun is the only stun gun that deploys from a distance, while other stun guns only shock your attacker when they are at arm’s length. More info on exactly what a taser is (there is some confusion out there) will be provided at the end of the article.
Read on to discover the cost breakdown of TASER weapons and which is best for your protection.

Note: You must follow your state and local laws regarding projectile Tasers and stun guns. See below for information regarding purchase, shipping, and licensing laws.
Best Overall Purchase: TASER Pulse +
The TASER Pulse + costs $450-500, is compact, lightweight, has a distance range of 15 feet (4.57m), and will call emergency services upon discharge when you use the Noonlight app. This device will immobilize a target for 30 seconds.
If you’re looking for the best bang for your buck, the TASER Pulse + will provide you with the protection you need for a price that won’t hurt your wallet. This model is compact, easy to carry and conceal if needed. The 15-foot projection overpowers and keeps attackers farther away for longer. The Pulse + is the best overall projectile stun gun.
Best for Accuracy: TASER Professional Series TASER 7CQ
The TASER Professional Series Home Defense Kit Taser 7cQ will cost $1600-1800, with dual cartridges and improved technology to increase accuracy at a distance range of 12 feet (3.66m).
Due to the improved technology and its availability to citizens, this is the perfect non-lethal home defense weapon. The 7CQ model features two discharges for multiple aggressors or subduing an attacker more than once. Once only carried by police and security, the TASER 7CQ is now available for home defense.
The TASER 7CQ is a pricey model that doesn’t reach as far, subdue an attacker as long, or have the Noonlight 911 service like the TASER Pulse +, which could be an issue if you’re unable to run away and call for help.
Best for Concealment: TASER Bolt 2
The TASER Bolt 2 is a mid-priced distance stun gun at $500-600. The Bolt 2 is smaller than other TASER models, featuring a single discharge cartridge with a 15-foot (4.57m) distance range and a 911 compatibility app.
The Bolt 2 is the new and improved version of the discontinued model TASER C2. This style carries the same punch as other TASER models, and you can easily conceal it with its small and ergonomic design. It looks like a stun gun and shoots like a classic TASER.
The Bolt 2’s biggest drawback is its single discharge. It’s available for pre-order through TASER and will start shipping in spring 2022.
Best for Close Proximity: TASER StrikeLight 2
While not a projectile taser, this stun gun carries a powerful punch. This model has a higher price tag than the other stun guns because you’re paying for the trusted TASER brand name, technology, and durability that other brands may not have.
The TASER StrikeLight costs $130-150, provides 100 5-second high-voltage shocks for the battery life, and carries the TASER brand name for peace of mind, durability, and reliability.
Is It Legal To Own a Taser?
It’s legal to own a Taser in most states, yet some states require a permit. You have the right to self-defense, but you’re ultimately responsible for following the state and local laws regarding weapon ownership. TASER conveniently provides an easy way to check if your state has restrictions.
Please don’t assume it’s permitted to live in a state with restrictions and have a TASER mailed to another address. This action is illegal, and you could face fines and/or jail time.
When I wrote this article, Rhode Island was the only state that deems civilian ownership of a TASER illegal. Hawaii legalized TASER ownership for self-defense on January 1, 2022, with age, background check, and training restrictions.
States that mandate background checks for TASERS are:
- Illinois
- Maryland
- Minnesota
You’re required to carry a TASER permit in the following states:
- Connecticut
- Delaware
- Illinois
- Massachusetts
- New Mexico
- West Virginia
- Puerto Rico
- Wisconsin
Not all Tasers are Tasers
I had an interesting email conversation with one of the managers at taser.com, and she asked me to provide the following information.
1. There is only one company that has a “TASER device” as “TASER” is an acronym for Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle. “TASER” is a registered trademark of TASER International, Inc. (now Axon Enterprise, Inc.) for energy weapons.
2. Devices we are regularly compared to are not TASER energy weapons (trademarked and capable of neuromuscular incapacitation), they are stun guns – similar to our StrikeLight Series.
3. Neuromuscular Incapacitation: NMI is the motor-nerve stimulation of the skeletal muscles that occurs when electrical pulses temporarily interfere with the command and control systems of the body.

Conclusion
TASERS are the best non-lethal tool for subduing an attacker. These weapons provide security by immobilizing your assailant and creating distance between you and the threat. The cost of a TASER will average $600 depending on the features that fit best for your training and self-defense needs. As a responsible owner, you must regard all state and local laws regarding TASERs and any other weapons.
